SMS Messaging in BrightMove

Compare BrightMove Engage and SimpleTexting integration options.

Updated this week

BrightMove offers two ways to send SMS text messages to candidates and hiring managers from your ATS. We recommend BrightMove Engage for the best experience and value.

BrightMove Engage (Recommended)

BrightMove Engage is our native SMS solution, built directly into your ATS for seamless communication with job applicants and hiring managers.

Why Choose BrightMove Engage?

Better Value - More cost-effective than third-party solutions (you can Save 48% per message on SMS costs with BrightMove Engage)
Built-In Analytics - Track usage and costs directly in your ATS
Simplified Setup - We handle the technical configuration for you
Single Platform - No need to manage a separate SMS service account

What You'll Need to Provide

Before we can set up SMS messaging for your account, we'll need some business information from you:

  • Company legal name and business details

  • Business address and contact information

  • Authorized representative information

  • Business description and use case for SMS messaging

Setup Timeline

Total time: Up to 5 business days

Once we receive your business information, our team will handle the configuration and approval process. We'll keep you updated throughout and notify you as soon as you're ready to start texting!

Costs

One-time fees:

  • Setup Fee: $99 per company

Monthly fees:

  • SMS Features Platform Fee: $25 per company (includes one telephone number, brand and campaign, and 500 SMS Message Segments)

  • SMS Usage Charge: $0.029 per Message Segment beyond the included 500

What is a Message Segment?

A "Message Segment" is the unit you're billed for when sending text messages. Understanding how messages are divided into segments helps you control your SMS costs.

Standard messages (basic text only):

  • Each segment = up to 160 characters

  • Uses only: letters, numbers, and basic punctuation

Messages with special characters:

  • Each segment = up to 70 characters

  • Triggered by ANY: emojis (😊, 👍), accented letters (é, ñ, ü), or non-English alphabets

Important: If your message contains even ONE special character, the ENTIRE message is limited to 70 characters per segment—not just that portion.

Cost Control Tips:

✓ Keep messages under 160 characters when possible
✓ Avoid emojis and special characters if you need to send longer messages
✓ Use links to your applicant portal for detailed information rather than long text messages

Remember: Every segment = one billable message, so shorter and simpler often means more cost-effective!

What Happens Next

Once we receive your business information, our team will:

  1. Create your messaging account and submit your business profile for approval

  2. Configure your SMS campaign and phone number

  3. Connect everything to your BrightMove account

  4. Notify you when you're ready to start texting with candidates!

Important: Consent Requirement

To comply with SMS regulations, we'll add opt-in language to your careers portal. Applicants will see a checkbox that reads: "I consent to receive SMS messages from BrightMove about my job application and other job-related notifications." This ensures you're only texting candidates who have agreed to receive messages.

Tracking Your SMS Usage

Once your BrightMove Engage setup is complete and active, you can monitor your texting activity and costs at any time.

To view your SMS analytics:

  1. Log into your BrightMove ATS

  2. Click on Analytics in the left-hand side panel

  3. Select the Engage tab

Here you'll see detailed near-real-time reports on your message volume, delivery rates, and usage patterns to help you track your SMS investment.

SimpleTexting Integration (Legacy Option)

SimpleTexting Set Up

  1. First, create your account with SimpleTexting.com

  2. Purchase text messages

  3. Request your API key from SimpleTexting.com Support

  4. Send your SimpleTexting API key, username and password to [email protected] or contact BrightMove Support via Chat

BrightMove Setup

Phone Types:

With our SimpleTexting integration, you can text both candidates and your hiring managers. Once you are notified that SimpleTexting has been enabled in your account, you will need to label which Candidate or Manager phone types are SMS-enabled.

To do that, go to:

  1. Settings

  2. Click Candidate Phone Types or Manager Phone Types, depending on which you are setting up

  3. Find the phone types from the list that you would like to be SMS-enabled and click the button under the SMS Type column. The most common choice will be Mobile or Cell and you can have more than one choice available

On the Candidate / Manager Profile:

When you have selected which phone types you'd like to be SMS-enabled, it's time to setup the candidate or manager profile.

First, the candidate or manager must have a valid phone number with an SMS-enabled Phone Type, as discussed in the previous section.

If you are only setting up SMS for your hiring managers, congratulations! You're done. This next step only applies for candidates.

SMS Allowed must be toggled on before you can text candidates. When applying to your jobs, candidates can choose to opt out of SMS and that cannot be reversed by a Recruiter in the ATS.

With this done, you are now ready to send SMS text messages to your managers or candidates.

SimpleTexting.com Notes

BrightMove's SMS messaging integration with SimpleTexting.com within the BrightMove application is an additional feature that can be activated for your company in order to take advantage of SMS capabilities.

Important:

  • This service only works with phone carriers within the United States. This feature will not work for Candidates or Managers with phone carriers outside the US.

  • SimpleTexting Trial accounts do not allow for integration. You must sign up for an Active account to use this service.

Setting up Inbound "SMS Message In"

From Account settings in SimpleTexting.com, you will need to set up a forwarding address using your BrightMove API Key, and optionally, your Email and/or Phone for SMS responses to go to so they can be captured as activities in BrightMove.

While logged into your SimpleTexting.com account:

  1. Once logged in, in the bottom left corner select "Integrations"

  2. Under Developer Tools, select "API & Webhooks"

  3. In the Webhooks sections, change "Version 2" to "Legacy"

  4. Enter in your SMS Forwarding URL using the format below and save your changes:

https://secure.brightmove.com/ATS/app/sms/inbound/YOUR-BRIGHTMOVE-API-KEY

Requirements for RPO Accounts to Use SMS Messaging (if applicable)

SMS Messaging can be turned on for the Parent company only if desired, but Child companies can only turn on SMS Messaging if their Parent company has it on.
