BrightMove Power Search: Basic Usage

Learn to access, run, and refine Power Searches across BrightMove without using Expert Mode.

Updated this week

1. Accessing Power Search

Power Search is available for the following entities:

  • Candidates

  • Managers

  • Clients/Departments

  • Jobs

To access it:

  1. Go to the left-hand navigation menu.

  2. Select the entity you'd like to search (e.g., Candidates).

  3. From the entity's submenu, click Power Search.

You’ll be brought to the Power Search screen, with filters on the left and results on the right.

2. Running a Wildcard Search

To return all records of the selected entity:

  • Type an asterisk * into the Power Search field and click Add Filter or press Enter.

This is known as a wildcard search and is useful as a starting point before refining results.

Tip: If the Company Preference Assume Wildcard on Search is enabled, the system will automatically apply a wildcard to any single-term search — helpful for name lookups.

3. Adding Filters

To narrow results:

  1. Use the Everything dropdown to select a field (e.g., Current Title).

  2. Type a keyword or phrase into the Power Search field.

  3. Click Add Filter.

Depending on the field you choose, the input may become a dropdown (for predefined values) or a number entry.

Important: For multi-word phrases (e.g., "account manager"), use quotation marks to keep the phrase together.

You’ll see your filter appear next to the input box. You can then repeat the process to add more filters.

4. Joining Filters (AND vs. OR)

By default, multiple filters create an AND search. For example:

  • Current Title: President AND Current Company: Windows → matches both

To change this to an OR search:

  1. Click the blue arrow next to one of the filters.

  2. Select Join With [other filter].

This will combine the two filters to show results matching either condition.

From this dropdown, you can also:

  • Edit an individual filter

  • Remove a filter

  • Remove or edit the subquery (the second joined filter)

5. Using Require or Exclude Options

To require or exclude a keyword:

  1. Select the field (e.g., Resume Text).

  2. Enter your term in the Power Search box.

  3. Before clicking Add Filter, check either Require or Exclude.

  • Require: Ensures the result must contain this value.

  • Exclude: Filters out any results with this value.

6. Using Refine By Filters

Power Search also supports quick filters via the Refine By panel on the left.

To use Refine By:

  1. Run a wildcard or partial search.

  2. Click any checkbox in the left-side Refine By panel (e.g., Candidate Source: Indeed).

This instantly applies that filter to your search without going through the dropdown menus.

7. Radius & Location Filtering

To search within a specific geographic radius:

  1. Click the hamburger icon (menu) in the top-right of the results grid.

  2. Select Location Filter.

  3. Enter a City, State, or Postal Code, and define the radius in miles.

  4. Click Apply Location Filter.

Your results will now be restricted to the specified geographic area.

8. Special Characters in Search Terms

When searching for terms that include special characters (e.g., slashes /):

  • Enclose the term in quotes. Example: "A/D"

This ensures proper matching and avoids parsing issues.
